Not Bad

Obama Rage Face (also known as “Not Bad” Face) is a rage comic reaction face based on a press photograph of Barack Obama wearing a sturgeon face during his official state visit to the United Kingdom in May 2011. The image is used as a positive response to a pleasant surprise or an outcome of an event that has surpassed one’s expectation, similar to the usage of “everything went better than expected” face.

On May 24th, 2011, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama paid a visit to the Queen of England at the Buckingham Palace. During the presidential couple’s first state visit to the United Kingdom, a peculiar photograph of the couple looking rather startled was taken by a Reuters photojournalist. The Obamas’ summit with the British royal family was widely covered by the British news media and the photograph was featured two days later as “Picture of the Day” by The Telegraph.

B**** Please

Yao Ming Face (sometimes referred to as “Fuck That Guy” or “Dumb Bitch”) is a rage comic-style contour drawing of the professional basketball player Yao Ming wearing a hearty smile. The image is typically used as a reaction face to convey a dismissive attitude towards someone else’s input in online discussions, then usually following something that one ups their input.

Me Gusta

Me Gusta is a rage comic face that is typically used to express one’s approval of an awkward or perverse situation. The caption “Me gusta” translates to “I like it” in Spanish. In its beginning, the phrase conveyed an odd sense of pleasure in sexually perverse contexts, but the meaning has since broadened to describe a more general state of being disturbed and pleased at the same time.

The colloquial Spanish phrase “Me Gusta” was first adopted into a rage comic drawing by illustrator Matt Oswald, who uploaded his artwork onto 4chan and Reddit on March 18th, 2010. The drawing was also uploaded onto his personal Tumblr blog and DeviantART account. Oswald eventually revealed himself as the creator of “Me Gusta” face in a Reddit thread as well as an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread on March 8th, 2011.

 

Troll Face

Trollface is a black and white drawing of a face with a large mischievous grin that is meant to portray the expression someone makes while trolling. Posting a Trollface image into a forum thread is often used to claim that someone was being fooled or intentionally angered. The face commonly appears in rage comics indicating that the character is being mischievous in some way.

A MSPaint comic made by deviantArt user Whynne about the pointless nature of trolling on 4Chan’s /v/, was uploaded on September 19th, 2008.

In his deviantART post, Whynne claims he was attempting to draw a comic character known as “Rape Rodent”

Forever Alone

Forever Alone is an exploitable rage comic character that is used to express loneliness and disappointment with life. 

Forever Alone is considered one of the first major rage comic spin-off characters to be creater after the original Rage Guy, which first sprang up on 4chan in 2009. According to various sources, the original comic was uploaded in a thread titled “April Fools” by FunnyJunk user Azuul on May 28th, 2010 (shown below).

In early June 2010, another instance featuring a bachelor salaryman was posted on 4chan (shown below, left). On August 5th, 2010, Redditor L_E_G_E_N_D posted a Forever Alone rage comic titled “Prom FFFUUUU”(shown below, right), receiving over 275 up votes and 70 comments prior to being archived.

NO.

The No. face is a rage comic character that is used to dismiss or disapprove of another person’s idea. 

The drawing was created for use on the forums of Cheat Engine, an open source game modifier. Chris Farral, better known by his handle Up2Admin, shared the first production of the image on August 10th, 2010 in the site’s art sub-forum after having finished it. One of the earliest comics utilizing the face was shared on Memebase on December 5th, 2010.

The face was allegedly used throughout the Cheat Engine forum before it began appearing on Reddit, 4chan’s /b/ (random), Facebook, and various miscellaneous blogs. It was added to the rage comic character repository All The Rage Faces  on August 6th, 2011. It was used on humor blog Me Gusta Memes for the first time on September 17th, 2011, followed by an appearance on Funny Pictures Blog  five days later. On September 23rd, 2011, Farral re-uploaded the image to DeviantArt , noting that he had seen the face begin to go viral and wanted to share it somewhere outside of the forums before another person tried to take credit it.

Okay Guy

Okay Guy is a sullen-looking rage comic character who is accompanied by the caption “okay.” The face is often used in the final panel of comics meant to convey a feeling of hopeless resignation.

The illustration is rumored to have originated on the imageboard 4chan, but no archived thread has been found. The earliest known instance of the face was posted on the Russian Internet humor website Joy Reactor on June 24th, 2009.

On April 16th, 2011, the “Okay Guy” Quickmeme page was created, featuring the Okay Guy face in advice animal-style image macros with captions describing disappointing situations (shown below). Within the next two years, the page received over 3,300 new submissions.
